Transforming lives with care and affection
What is foster care?
Foster care is a temporary protective measure for children at risk, providing them with a safe and loving family environment. The well-being and development needs of children are best met in safe, loving homes. For more information about foster care, visit Segurança Social
What is the need for foster families?
In January 2024, more than 6,000 Portuguese children were living in institutions, with fewer than 200 placed in foster families. Portugal ranks last in Europe for placing children in foster care. Additionally, there is no formalised system of "kinship care" (where grandparents, aunts, uncles, or other blood relatives take on the care of chldren when biological parents are unable to do so).
How can I help?
Consider offering help to your family, friends, or in your community, especially in situations where you know there are children and families in need of support. Your action can help prevent children from being removed from their families.
Consider fostering a child or teenager. Click here for information on fostering events near you or visit the Segurança Social website for more information.
